The Paralimni lake is “a degraded area that suffers from serious disturbance and lack of effective protection and management.
Disgracefully, despite being an important wetland for breeding and wintering birds, the Cyprus government permits hunting in some areas around the lake.
BirdLife Cyprus volunteers sound the alarm after spotting at least two injured flamingos at Paralimni Lake.
Members managed to save the bird and take it to a specialist who said the bird had been shot three times. Another shot flamingo was also seen in the lake but so far it was not possible to save it.
The injured bird was found at Paralimni lake during wetland surveys last Friday 21th of Januari, according to BirdLife Cyprus.
The flamingo was taken to a vet after consultation with the Game and Fauna Fund (GFF), where X-rays identified shotgun pellets lodged in its leg, wing and one in its eye.
Such tragic events are all too common in this area. Last year, two other Flamingos were also confirmed shot dead at the lake. Disgracefully, despite being an important wetland for breeding and wintering birds, the Cyprus government permits hunting in some areas around the lake.
